Problem #12 · Steve in Action

Counter Surfing

Counter surfing is a firm correction. The dog jumps up — "No." Grab the leash, pull him down, pop the leash, put him in his place bed. "No, counter surfing." Pet him while he's in place. Don't release. Wait thirty minutes, treat, then release.

Most important: don't let the habit start. If a puppy counter-surfs, it only gets worse with age.

You can also stand in front of the counter yourself. "No, this is my territory." Keep the dog five feet back. Use the floor surface — carpet versus wood — to create a no-go zone. Be proactive.

At dinner, put the dog in a place bed by the table. He can be part of the family — just not at the table begging. The dog wants inclusion, not food.

Always reward positive behavior, not the misbehavior.
