Problem #22 · Steve in Action

Mounting / Humping

Let's talk about mounting. First, see your vet, because urinary tract infections, prostate issues, and unspayed females in heat can all trigger it. You don't want to train around a medical cause.

Once the vet clears the dog, the rule is simple: mounting is rarely about sex. It is about arousal, stress, or overexcitement. The laugh from your dinner guests just rewarded the behavior, so the dog is going to keep doing it.

Step one: the second the dog starts, stand up, walk away, no eye contact, no pushing, no talking, no knee to the chest. Step two: send the dog to place on a mat across the room with a long-lasting chew. Step three: train the dog for your family and your neighbors, not just yourself.

That means the dog has to behave when company is over, not just when it is quiet at home. Match the dog to the family — including the family that has company. Now here's Steve's notes.
