Problem #27 · Steve in Action

Scares Easily (generalized fearfulness)

Let's talk about the dog who scares easily. First, see your vet, because pain and hypothyroidism can make a dog jumpy. A sore back turns a thunderstorm into a nightmare.

Once the vet clears the dog, here is the trap: the second your dog startles, you pick him up, cuddle him, and say, it's OK, it's OK. You just paid the dog to be afraid. Step one: be boring when the dog startles.

No touch, no talk, no eye contact. Step two: counter-condition. Treats appear the moment the scary thing happens, not before, not after.

Step three: build confidence with place work, structured walks, and obstacle courses. Patricia McConnell calls it the jolly routine. Your calm is contagious.

Step four: be the leader, be the alpha, and the alpha does not flinch at the toaster. Now, the deeper fix: confidence is built in tiny daily reps, not in one big brave moment. Place work, sniff walks, predictable meals.

Now here's Steve's notes.
