Licking Paws (chronic, between the toes)
Let's talk about chronic paw licking. First, see your vet, because brown-stained saliva between the toes is the classic sign of allergies — food, environmental, or flea-bite. Step one: flea control on every pet in the house, year-round, no exceptions.
Step two: a food trial with a novel protein for eight to twelve weeks, no table scraps, no flavored meds. Step three: wipe between the toes with a vet-approved antiseptic wipe after every walk. Step four: while the trial runs, an e-collar at night so the paw can actually heal.
Karen Overall of the ACVB points out that chronic licking is self-soothing behavior. That is why punishment makes it worse, not better. Be the leader, be the alpha — and the alpha does not scold a dog for licking an itch.
Now, the deeper fix: chronic licking is a symptom, and the symptom does not respond to discipline. Find the allergen, fix the diet, and the licking fades. Now here's Steve's notes.
